1. Brand New (1-Trip/Factory) 

In short, a Brand New Container is used for only one trip, with minimal wear. 

Criteria Description
Overall Highest Quality
Trips Maximum 1
Age Maximum 1 year - Mandatory for all Offers
Structure

Structurally sound. Perfect beams, frames, and corner posts without any bending.

Exterior

Minimal dents/scratches. 100% original paint, no or only minor repair work as per IICL standard 99% dent-free

Interior

Completely sealed, with no daylight visibility when closed. Minimal scratches, dents, and stains on walls. Clean interior, no residue of toxic substance. 

Floor

Little to no scratches. No stains (or at least minor stains are still acceptable according to IICL) on the floor.

Standards

IICL-6
Valid CSC Plate
Usually food grade, but not guaranteed (inspection for food-grade cargo is recommended). 

 

 

2. Excellent Condition (Multi-Trip/IICL)

Multi-trip containers are in excellent condition and they meet the standards and specifications set by the Institute of International Container Lessors (IICL). The IICL container is structurally sound and with minimal wear and tear.

Trips 2 or more trips
Age Usually 1-5 years
Structure

Structurally sound with excellent condition of frames, walls, roof, doors, and seals. Minor scuffs or bends might be possible (all still within ISO).

No significant deformation or cracks

All possible repairs or dents within IICL

Exterior

95% in original paint
Minor dents and scratches
Proper repairs might be visible but executed to industry standards (IICL)

Interior

Completely sealed, with no daylight visibility when closed
95% dent-free, with only minimal scratches or dents on walls
Minor repainting of scratches
Clean interior with possible non-transferable stains

Floor

Floors in good condition, minimal scuffs
With some possible minor stains on the wood.

Standards

IICL-5 or 6
Valid CSC Plate
Often food grade, but not guaranteed (inspection for food grade cargo is recommended). 

 

 

3. Cargo worthy

Structurally sound containers fit for shipping; they meet all safety and operational requirements. This container condition will protect cargo from wind, rain, and other harsh weather during shipping.

Overall Used but in good condition for transportation.
Trips Countless
Age Usually 5 to 15 years
Structure

Acceptable, since it can be safely used for international shipments
Visible rust, but acceptable condition of frames, beams, corner posts, and relevant structure.

It will still fulfill international shipping standards.

Exterior

More prevalent corrosion and dents, likely to be previously repaired multiple times.
Possibly many scratches and paint touch-ups (non-matching colors could have been used).
Logos might have been neutralized, might be renumbered.
Functioning and sealed doors.

Interior

Minimum 50% mark-free interior with some scuffing, scratching, and minor surface rust.
Sealed interior (wind and watertight)
There should be no holes in the roof, walls, or doors.

Floor

Floors may have minor delamination or stains from previous cargo.
No toxic contamination.
Stable and secure for cargo

Cargo Worthy Repair Standard (below IICL)
Usually not food grade

 

 

4. Wind and water-tight “WWT”

Containers are inspected to ensure no wind or water penetrates through the roof, walls, or doors. It is suitable for local storage. The containers may show signs of wear, but they are generally structurally sound.

Overall

Wind and water-tight
Can be used for temporary storage of ordinary goods
Not suitable for frequent cargo moves

Trips Countless
Age Often older than 10-15 years
Structure

The container has likely undergone multiple repairs, showing signs of wear and tear.
Usually some damage, (the container could be repaired or non-repaired, and there could be a high-cost estimate to repair further)

Exterior

Extensive markings, corrosion, and scratches and Major Rust
There should be no holes

Interior

Sealed, preventing entry of wind and water
Extensive markings, corrosion, and scratches and Major Rust

Floor

Marked floors with moderate delamination
Significant wear of floor.
It should be inspected for use cases. The container could be problematic for long-term storage.

Standards

No standards
Eventually no CSC plate

5. As Is

As-is containers are damaged containers that have been taken out of commission in the shipping industry. Containers sold without repairs or guarantees may have significant wear, damage, or rust, suitable for non-transport uses. The container can often be considered metal scrap.

Criteria Description
Overall

Wind and water might enter the inside.
Can be structurally heavily damaged.
Not suitable for cargo moves.

Trips Countless
Age

Typically end of life 15+ years

Structure Structural damage may require extensive repairs, or necessary repairs might not be possible anymore.
Exterior

Significant damage to the roof and/or walls
It might have some holes.
Degraded seals, difficult-to-open doors.

Interior

Eventually not sealed anymore, entry of wind and water might be possible.

Light might get through the holes.

Floor

Significant damage to floors is possible.
There might be some rotten, missing floor elements.

Standards

No standards
Eventually no CSC plate
